How to Create Books with Fixed Format for Comics on Amazon KDP

Publishing comics on Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) requires a fixed-layout format to preserve your artwork and panel arrangement. Here’s how to switch from reflowable to fixed format:

🛠️ Steps to Use Fixed Format for Comics on KDP

  1. Use Kindle Create for Fixed Layout
    • Download Kindle Create.
    • Choose the “Comics” or “Print Replica” option when starting a new project, as in this figure

  1. Import your comic as a PDF to preserve layout. You can also select series of images instead
  2. Export as a .kpf file (Kindle Package Format), which supports fixed layout.
  3. Upload the Fixed Format File
    • Upload your .kpf file to KDP
    • Make sure to preview it using Kindle Previewer to ensure layout integrity.
  4. Important Caveats
    • Fixed-layout books are not supported on all Kindle devices, especially older or smaller screens.
    • You’ll lose reviews and sales history unless you contact KDP support to migrate them.
  5. Why Fixed Format Matters for Comics
Comics rely heavily on visual storytelling, so reflowable formats can distort panel order, spacing, and text placement. Fixed layout ensures your readers see the comic exactly as you designed it.
