How to hack the Norwegian Reading B1-B2 level in 2025: a practical guide of question types for the reading test

Information about the test can be found on the official website of the organizer. I found it really helpful to read, and it was very helpful for me to read it again the day before taking the test. They also provide one example test on the website. In addition, you can search on the internet for practice sample exams. This post details the types of questions that may appear in the tests.

The reading section of the Norskprøven B1-B2 test includes various types of multiple-choice questions. Some questions focus on synonyms, some a short text with dropdown word options for 2-3 words in the text, while others feature multiple paragraphs that narrate a story about certain individuals. These longer texts may have several related questions. Additionally, there is one question where you are given several sentences and tasked with rearranging them to create a coherent and meaningful story. The last one, with only one question, is the most difficult type. So, don’t worry too much about it (I’m pretty sure that I didn’t answer that question correctly, but I still got B2).

An important thing when taking the test is to skip the difficult questions and come back with them later on if you have time. When I took the test, I didn’t really feel like I had an abundant amount of time, but there’s no need to worry because you don’t need to answer all questions correctly to get B2.

Now, let me break it down in more detail and offer specific tips for each type of question you may encounter.

Multiple Choice Questions About Synonyms

  • Description: In this part, you’ll be given a sentence or a phrase, and you’ll need to choose the correct synonym for a word in the sentence from the multiple-choice options.

Multiple Paragraphs Telling a Story (with Several Related Questions)

  • Description: You’ll read a story or a narrative that spans multiple paragraphs, and then you’ll answer several questions related to the story’s content, characters, or specific details.
  • Tips:
    • Skim the text first: Quickly scan through the text to get a general sense of the story before diving into the questions. This will help you understand the main theme.
    • Identify key details: When reading the paragraphs, underline or mentally note key information (who, what, where, when). This will help when answering specific questions later.
    • Answer questions based on the text, not your assumptions: Always go back to the text to find the answer. Don’t rely on your own knowledge or assumptions; base your answers on what’s directly stated or implied in the text.
    • Pay attention to details: Questions might ask about the sequence of events, the motivations of characters, or the tone of the story. Focus on these aspects when reading.
    • Eliminate answers that don’t fit: If you know that a paragraph is about cooking, for example, you can immediately rule out anyone who doesn’t have anything to do with food or cooking.

Rearrange Sentences to Form a Logical Story

  • Description: This part involves a set of jumbled sentences. You’ll need to rearrange them to form a coherent story or passage.
  • Tips:
    • Look for clues: Sentences usually contain words or phrases that suggest the order, such as time indicators (e.g., “first,” “afterward,” “finally”) or cause-and-effect relationships.
    • Start with the introduction or conclusion: Typically, the first sentence will introduce the main idea or the subject, while the last one will conclude the story.
    • Focus on the flow: After identifying the beginning and end, figure out how the middle sentences connect logically. Look for transitional words (e.g., “but,” “therefore,” “because,” “in addition”).
    • Check for grammatical clues: Sentence structures can also give you hints about the order. For instance, if a sentence starts with “For example,” it’s likely to follow a more general statement.

Here’s an example of the third type of question you might encounter in the reading section of the Norskprøven, where you need to rearrange sentences to form a coherent story. I’ll give you a set of jumbled sentences, and you’ll need to rearrange them to create a logical narrative.

Jumbled Sentences:

Explanation:

  • First sentence: The introductory sentence sets the tone that she knows the job will be a big change, but she’s ready for the challenge.
  • Second sentence: Gives background about this being her first job in this type of environment.
  • Third sentence: Then explains the positive emotion she has from getting the job.
  • Fourth sentence: The sentence about her nervousness but also excitement fits naturally after she starts her new job.
  • Fifth sentence: Describes her initial struggles in the job.
  • Sixth sentence: Ends with her becoming more confident after a few weeks.

By practicing this kind of task, you’ll improve your ability to quickly recognize the logical flow of ideas in a text. Explanation:

  • First sentence: Introduces the main character and his initial uncertainty about moving to a new city.
  • Second sentence: Reinforces the scale of the decision and highlights his fear of not knowing anyone.
  • Third sentence: Indicates that he has seen an opportunity that could be a big change in his life, setting the stage for the action he decides to take.
  • Fourth sentence: This adds to the context of why the decision was so important—he had received a job offer.
  • Fifth sentence: Describes the initial challenges he faced after moving, emphasizing how difficult it was to adjust and how lonely he felt.
  • Sixth sentence: Ends with a positive note that after some time, he started feeling more at home and made new friends, showing the eventual success of his decision.

Key Strategies for Solving:

  1. Look for time markers: Phrases like “etter noen mÃ¥neder,” “i starten,” and “da han sÃ¥ muligheten” help identify the chronological flow.
  2. Cause and effect: Consider how each sentence connects logically. The character first has to make a decision (the big move), then encounters challenges, and finally adjusts to his new life.
  3. Starting point: The first sentence often introduces the character’s uncertainty, and the final sentence wraps up with a resolution or positive change.
