Common issues with installing Matlab on Linux and how to resolve

Installing MATLAB on Linux can sometimes present hurdles due to missing system libraries, display server configurations, or permission boundaries.

1. The Installer Fails to Launch or Crashes Immediately

  • The Issue: Running ./install results in a generic error like std::runtime_error or Unable to launch the MATLABWindow. This is usually caused by missing shared libraries (.so files) on minimal or headless Linux installations.
  • How to Resolve:
    1. Navigate inside your extracted installer folder to locate the executable binary directly:
      Bash
cd ./bin/glnxa64/
./MATLABWindow
  • Running ./MATLABWindow directly will print the exact missing shared libraries (e.g., libasound.so.2, libX11, etc.) to your terminal.
  • Install the missing libraries using your distribution’s package manager (e.g., sudo apt install ... on Ubuntu/Debian or sudo dnf install ... on RHEL/Fedora).

2. GUI/Display Issues When Using sudo

  • The Issue: If you run sudo ./install to install MATLAB into a system directory like /usr/local/MATLAB, the installer may fail to open a graphical user interface (GUI) window because security policies block root from accessing your current user’s X11/Wayland display server.
  • How to Resolve: Temporarily grant the root user access to your display before running the installer script:
    Bash
xhost +SI:localuser:root
sudo -H ./install
xhost -SI:localuser:root
  • Alternatively, you can install MATLAB inside your own user home directory (e.g., /home/username/MATLAB), which requires no sudo privileges and sidesteps display-permission problems entirely.

3. File Extraction Corruption (Broken Symlinks)

  • The Issue: Extracting the MATLAB installer ZIP file on Windows (or using a third-party tool) before moving it to Linux often corrupts or drops symbolic links, causing mysterious installation failures.
  • How to Resolve: Always download the Linux zip archive directly inside your Linux environment or transfer the raw zip file over, then unpack it natively using the command line:
    Bash
unzip matlab_R20XXy_Linux.zip -d ./matlab_folder

4. Insufficient Space in the Temporary (/tmp) Directory

  • The Issue: The MATLAB installer unpacks a large payload into the system temporary directory during startup. If your /tmp partition runs out of space, the installer will abort or crash midway.
  • How to Resolve: Redirect the installer to use a directory with more disk space (such as your home directory) by setting the MATLAB_INSTALLER_TEMP_DIR environment variable before running the script:
    Bash
export MATLAB_INSTALLER_TEMP_DIR=/home/username/temp
./install

5. Headless / Remote SSH Server Installation Failures

  • The Issue: Trying to install MATLAB via a standard SSH connection without forwarding graphical interfaces will cause the GUI installer to fail.
  • How to Resolve:
    • Option A (X11 Forwarding): Connect via SSH with the -Y flag enabled (ssh -Y user@remote-host) so the installer GUI can render locally.
    • Option B (MATLAB Package Manager): Use MathWorks’ command-line installer tool (MPM), which does not require a graphical desktop environment and is ideal for clusters and Docker containers.
