Learn A1-A2 Norwegian in the song “Min Hverdag”

Level: A1-A2 (Beginner)

Topic: Daily Routine, Days of the Week, and Word Order

Goal: Learn to describe your day and understand why the verb moves position in Norwegian sentences.

Part 1: Vocabulary – Ukedagene (The Days of the Week)

In the chorus, we list the days. In Norwegian, days are not capitalized (unless they start a sentence).

Memorize the days:

  1. mandag (Monday)
  2. tirsdag (Tuesday)
  3. onsdag (Wednesday)
  4. torsdag (Thursday)
  5. fredag (Friday)
  6. lørdag (Saturday)
  7. søndag (Sunday)

Key Routine Verbs:

  • Å stå opp: To get up.
  • Å pusse tenner: To brush teeth.
  • Å vaske seg: To wash oneself (Reflexive verb).
  • Å ta bussen: To take the bus.
  • Å ha fri: To have free time / be off work.

Part 2: Grammar Focus – The V2 Rule (Word Order)

This is the most critical rule for beginners. In a Norwegian statement, the Verb must always be the Second idea.

Look at these two lines from the song:

  1. Standard Order:
    • Subject + Verb + Object
    • “Jeg spiser frokost.” (I eat breakfast).
    • Analysis: 1. Jeg | 2. Spiser.
  2. Inverted Order (The V2 Rule):
    • Time/Place + Verb + Subject
    • “På jobben skriver jeg.” (At work I write).
    • Analysis: 1. På jobben | 2. Skriver | 3. Jeg.

Why?

Because we started the sentence with “På jobben” (At work), the verb skriver must come immediately after it. You cannot say “På jobben jeg skriver.”

Practice Exercise: Fix the Word Order

Move the verb to the second position.

  1. (I dag / jeg / lager / middag) -> I dag lager jeg middag.
  2. (Nå / vi / går / hjem) -> _____________________.
  3. (På mandag / jeg / tar / bussen) -> _____________________.

Part 3: Reading Comprehension

Read the lyrics again and answer the questions.

Excerpt:

“Jeg tar bussen klokka ni… Lørdag og søndag har vi fri… Jeg lager middag til en venn.”

Questions:

  1. Hva gjør personen klokka ni? (What does the person do at nine?)
    • Svar: Han/Hun _______________________.
  2. Hvilke dager har vi fri? (Which days do we have free?)
    • Svar: Vi har fri på ____________ og ____________.
  3. Hvem lager han middag til? (Who does he make dinner for?)
    • Svar: Han lager middag til en ____________.

Part 4: Writing – Min Morgen (My Morning)

Write 3 sentences about your own morning routine. Try to start one sentence with a time word (like “Klokka syv…”) to practice the V2 rule!

Useful time words:

  • Først (First)
  • Etterpå (Afterwards)
  • Klokka åtte (At 8 o’clock)

Example:

  • Klokka syv står jeg opp. (At seven I get up).
  • Først drikker jeg kaffe. (First I drink coffee).
  • Etterpå pusser jeg tenner. (Afterwards I brush teeth).
