Gravity: The force holding planets in orbit around the sun

Gravity is the quiet force that keeps the solar system from flying apart. The Sun’s immense mass creates a gravitational pull strong enough to hold every planet—Mercury to Neptune—in a continuous fall around it.

Instead of crashing into the Sun, planets move sideways fast enough that they miss it, over and over, tracing elegant elliptical paths through space. This balance between forward motion and solar gravity is what we call an orbit.

Without gravity, Earth wouldn’t have seasons, a stable climate, or even a home to circle. It’s the cosmic glue that shapes everything from planetary systems to galaxies.
