A fraction is a number that represents a part of a whole. It’s written as one number over another, separated by a line.
The Parts of a Fraction
A fraction is made up of two key parts: the numerator and the denominator.
Numerator
The numerator is the top number of the fraction. It tells you how many parts you have out of the total.
Denominator
The denominator is the bottom number of the fraction. It tells you how many equal parts the whole is divided into. A helpful way to remember is that “denominator” sounds like “denomination,” which tells you the type or size of the parts.
Examples
Let’s look at the fraction using the example of a pizza:
- Denominator: The 8 at the bottom means the whole pizza was cut into 8 equal slices.
- Numerator: The 3 at the top means you have 3 of those slices.
Here are a few more examples:
- $latex \frac{1}{2}$: The whole is divided into 2 equal parts, and you have 1 of them (one half).
- $latex \frac{5}{6}$: The whole is divided into 6 equal parts, and you have 5 of them.
